The last explosive eruption occurred 3,600 years ago during the Minoan age and as well as creating Santorini's famous 'Caldera' is credited with destroying the Minoan palaces of Knossos and Phaestos on Crete. Mild volcanic activity continues until this very day. Santorini is the southern most isalnd of the Cycladic group in the Aegean Sea ans is located 63 nautical miles north of Crete.
