Souda Bay is 15km long and 2-4 kms wide and is one of the worlds largest and deepest natural bays. Near the mouth of the bay between Akrotiri and Kalives can be found a group of small islands, recently opened to the public with Venetian fortifications. The largest, Souda Island, gives it's name to the bay. The Venetians built their castle here to protect them from the danger of the Turkish threat. The castle wall encompassed the whole of the island.ou
